this with a knowledge of the progress of opinion in Europe and America on the subject. They all hold the view that the position in Singapore differs so much from that in Europe particularly, that conditions there do not hold. One fact in particular stands out that among the Chinese there is only one woman to six men, while the Chinese both men and women have no views of morality in the European sense. The evidence is complete that every married Chinese woman expects to be "ill" within a month or so of being married infected by her husband. This is taken as a matter of course and is openly acknowledged by their mothers. I laid our modem views before them, but they are very definite that they will be ineffective (and indeed are ineffective) in Singapore and unless the whole race is to be practically destroyed, something ppecial must be done as illicit intercourse before and after marriage is taken as a matter of course. The evidence too points to the fact that every prostitute is affected.
